BASF NAMES SALES MANAGER FOR ACRYLIC MONOMERS, SUPERABSORBENT POLYMERS IN NORTH AMERICA BASF has appointed Drew Rutherford to the position of sales manager of its Acrylic Monomers and Superabsorbent Polymers business in North America. In his new role, Rutherford is responsible for the management of sales activities for acrylic monomers and superabsorbent polymers to manufacturers of dispersions, adhesives, coatings, personal care products, firefighting gels, medical gel packs, water treatment chemicals, textile and leather auxiliaries, nonwoven fabrics, detergents, plastics, and fibers in North America.
CHEMCENTRAL KANSAS CITY PLANT SUFFERS FIRE On Feb. 7, a fire broke out at the CHEMCENTRAL plant located at 910 N. Prospect in Kansas City, MO. The cause of the fire has yet to be determined, but it appears to have started outdoors in a tank holding a polymer used to manufacture sealants and caulk. Surrounding businesses and residents were affected, but it is not clear how many community members were displaced or for how long.
DOW REICHHOLD NAMES ANTIMICROBIAL POLYMER TECHNOLOGY Dow Reichhold Specialty Latex has announced the naming of its novel technologies (patents pending) to produce emulsion polymers that offer a range of antimicrobial functionality. The company has selected PolySāf™ Antimicrobial Polymers as the name for the technology platform. “Sometimes, everything is in a name,” said Douglas Johnson, a global marketing manager for Dow Reichhold. “So we have brought three critical components into ours. The PolySāf name references the tunable polymer platform, the sustainable antimicrobial feature through the use of the acryonym SAF, and the safety component provided by antimicrobial protection in general.”
HUNTSMAN OFFERS ADHESIVES FOR PRODUCTION OF ELECTRONIC COMPONENTS Advanced ARALDITE®
epoxy adhesives for bonding and potting of electronic components are RoHS-compliant, UL-recognized high-temperature materials that feature excellent chemical and moisture resistance along with good dielectric characteristics. The room temperature- and elevated temperature-curing products offer low shrink and good sag resistance, producing long-lasting encapsulation and joints on metals and thermoplastics. The adhesives are formulated with a broad range of work lives, from products with long open times to ultra-fast setting systems for rapid assembly and repairs. ARALDITE polyurethane materials formulated by Huntsman scientists for electronics applications are UL-recognized,
high-temperature systems that combine flexibility with good lap shear strength. The materials are particularly well suited for bonding hard-to-join thermoplastic substrates and encapsulating pressure-sensitive components. Like the epoxy systems, these polyurethane adhesives are sag resistant and cure at room temperature or at elevated temperatures.
I&J FISNAR OFFERS MINI-POPPET PNEUMATIC DISPENSING VALVE The VMP30H is a multipurpose, mini-poppet pneumatic valve designed for controlled dispensing of low- to high-viscosity materials, such as silicones, RTV, epoxy, rubber adhesives, greases and filled materials. The poppet design minimizes surface area and friction between the valve piston and the material, thus extending the life of the valve.
LOPAREX INVESTS IN STATE-OF-THE-ART CAPACITY Loparex, Willowbrook, IL, has announced several capital investments to add paper coating and film blowing capacity, as well as to streamline operations within North America. A high-speed paper coating line has been started at the company’s Hammond, WI, facility, as has a second multi-layer blown film extrusion line.
