CELEBRATING LABOR DAY

This week, ASI celebrates the working spirit that inspired Labor Day with some fun facts.*

• The first Labor Day was held on Sept. 5, 1882, in New York City.
  
• Congress passed an act making the first Monday in September of every year a legal holiday in the District of Columbia and the territories in June of 1894.
  
• Labor Day celebrations were outlined in the first proposal of the holiday to include street parades intended to celebrate "the strength and esprit de corps of the trade and labor organizations" followed by festivals for workers and their families.
