W. CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa. — A guide for classifying and choosing adhesives and sealants is being developed by a task group within the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) Subcommittee D14.60 on Adhesive Material Classification System, part of D-14 on Adhesives.

The draft, “Guide for Selecting Aerospace and General Purpose Adhesives and Sealants,” is designed to be application-specific for each bonding or sealing use. Its extensive procedural tables provide both design engineers and users a compatibility of product/process with the part material/subsequent process, such as adherent/substrate cleaning and preparation. When completed, the guide will be a useful tool for those developing bonding or sealing requirements for manufacturing, maintenance or overhaul. Currently, the subcommittee on the Web- based ASTM Interactive Standards Development Forum is reviewing the guide.
