Sonoco recently announced that Adam Wood has been named division vice president and general manager of Converted Products/Paper–Europe, effective January 1, 2011, according to John Colyer, vice president, Global Industrial Converting. Wood will replace Eddie Smith, who is retiring after nearly 40 years with the company. Smith will remain with the company through March 31, 2011, to help with the transition and work on special projects.

In this new position, Wood will have responsibility for the company’s Sonoco-Alcore business unit, which includes 30 tube and core plants and six uncoated recycled paperboard mills operating in 15 European countries. He will report to Colyer.

“Adam is an excellent choice to lead our European tube and core/paper business after working with Eddie as the head of sales and marketing over the past four years,” said Colyer. “He has strong commercial skills and a detailed understanding of the European tube and core market, particularly in emerging markets. Eddie has done a terrific job in strengthening our business while leading our European operations since 2006. We appreciate all Eddie has done for the company. During his career with Sonoco, he has provided countless contributions in building business development processes while successfully running several of our consumer and industrial businesses globally.”
