The Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering program at The University of Akron recently received $3 million in funding from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. The endowment will create the W. Gerald Austen Endowed Chair, in honor of Dr. W. Gerald Austen, a cardiac and thoracic surgeon who was born in Akron. Austen served on the board of trustees for the Knight Foundation and has made several contributions to Akron. The first recipient of the endowed chair is University of Akron Professor Matthew Becker, Ph.D. Becker and his research team are developing medical devices and regenerative medicine applications with polymer science.
