Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker James Harrison recently announced he was taking away his kids' participation trophies, reportedly because he wants them to “earn a real trophy.” In last week's poll, we asked if you agree that kids shouldn’t be awarded trophies simply for participating.

Almost three-fourths of participants said “Yes,” kids shouldn’t be awarded trophies simply for participating. 15% responded “No,” kids should be awarded participation trophies and 4% were unsure.

One reader commented, “Most kids are not going to be stars or best at anything. What is the harm in giving them recognition and encouragement for trying?”

Another participant said, “You need to learn the skill before you compete with it.”
