Have your travel plans changed with the recent frenzy over swine flu?

It comes at an unfortunate time, with TAPPI PLACE and PSTC TECH 32 right around the corner. But with the number of cases of swine flu increasing – and the virus’ potential affect on the economy – many in our industry are changing their plans or simply staying home. In fact, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that U.S. travelers avoid all nonessential travel to Mexico.

One wonders if the media isn’t creating more of a frenzy about the swine flu than is really necessary. Yes, people are getting sick and some are dying from it. But here is some perspective: according to the CDC, in the United States more than 200,000 people are hospitalized for complications from the common flu, and about 36,000 people die from flu-related causes. Sixty four cases have been confirmed with lab tests in the United States as of today.
