This week in adhesive news, researchers at MIT have discovered a way to keep hydrogels from dehydrating. The researchers, led by associate professor Xuanhe Zhao, developed a technique to coat the hydrogel in elastomers, locking moisture into the gel. Inspired by human skin, which has a protective outer layer over the more sensitive inner layer, the researchers are investigating biomedical applications of the new hydrogel such as artificial skin. The hydrogel even has characteristics that mimic blood vessels and nerves.
