Researchers at the Ruhr University Bochum recently discovered a catalyst that selectively converts CO2 into ethylene. Hemma Mistry, a Ph.D. student and member of the research team, used copper films with hydrogen or oxygen plasmas as catalysts. The new catalyst reportedly has a higher ethylene production rate and higher selectivity than traditional catalysts, meaning it produces more ethylene with fewer unwanted byproducts. According to Professor Beatriz Roldan Cuenya, lead researcher, the results of their experiments could lead to new designs for catalysts on a nanoscale.
