Could the decontamination of landfills and open dumpsites really prove to be profitable? According to a dissertation by Yahya Jani, Ph.D., of Linnaeus University, yes they can. Jani believes that the environmentally hazardous materials from these dump sites can be recycled as energy or reused as valuable raw materials throughout various industries. Jani views landfill waste not as a problem, but at a potential resource.

In his dissertation, Jani indicates that the extraction of valuable materials from hazardous waste could possibly contribute to the reduction in the overuse of natural resources on Earth. Furthermore, he believes that it could even reduce the emissions of greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide and contaminated leachates.
