Nitto Denko Corp. recently announced the development of a unique new photosensitive epoxy material that can be used for optical waveguides. This new material is highly transparent in the near-infrared range and is flexible, allowing the creation of optical circuits through patterning using UV exposure, thus replacing conventional dry-etching processes. Embedded optical waveguides can be created using the photosensitive epoxy material. The light-transmitting part (core) pattern surface is flat with a rectangular cross-section. The wrapping around the core (clad) can also be embedded, allowing construction of a 100 micrometer film on the substrate. The optical characteristics of the material are excellent, leading to low 0.1 dB/cm losses over the 0.7-1.0 micrometer range. Excellent flexibility allows the material to be used in film circuits.
