ARLINGTON, Va. —PACK EXPO International has spurred economic growth in the packaging-machinery sector through a tremendous increase in quotation activity reported in the Packaging Machinery Manufacturers Institute’s (PMMI) monthly Business Conditions Index (BCI). PMMI’s BCI measurement for sales leads jumped 21.7 points to 75.7, more than 25 points above the midpoint of 50, which indicates expansion.
For the October report, which covers between October 15, 2002, and November 15, 2002, general business conditions increased to 60.4, up 5.8 points. New orders for machinery increased by 6.3 points to 60.9. Quotations for packaging equipment increased a record 21.7 points to 75.7. Shipments increased 1.2 points to move to 53.2.
“Based on what members are indicating, PACK EXPO International has provided the quality sales leads needed for the packaging sector following more than 18 months of slow to little growth,” says Charles D. Yuska, president of PMMI. “The sales leads generated at PACK EXPO International will drive packaging-machinery sales for the next 12-18 months, and we expect to see solid growth in packaging-machinery purchases in the order of $5-8 billion in the next 18 months.”
PACK EXPO International was held November 3-7, 2002, at Chicago’s McCormick Place. The show featured more than 1,600 exhibitors spread over 1.2 million net square feet.
PACK EXPO Las Vegas 2003 takes place October 13-15, 2003, at the Las Vegas Convention Center. The convention will feature the latest award-winning packages from leading packaging organizations.
