Green Packaging

Packaging is now available based on polylactic acid (PLA), a corn-based material that can be turned into compost at commercial composting facilities.

Continental Packaging Solutions has introduced “green” packaging in the form of PLA. Polylactic acid (PLA) is a corn-based material that can be turned into compost at commercial composting facilities. The metamorphosis from bottle to earth-friendly compost is completed in less than 12 weeks.

Scrupulous packagers have been clamoring for environmentally sensitive plastic substitutes since the harmful effects of certain resins were first known.

“We’re thrilled to be able to offer this technology to our customers at a time when our earth needs it the most,” said Continental Vice President Jim Gilbert. “The marketplace has been asking for this kind of packaging solution for years, and now we can give them what they want.”

A number of design options are available as well. PLA not only holds the same appearance as PET, but it can be run in the same molds, and works in thermoforming and injection molding processes. There is no need for new tooling to accommodate this technology.

PLA is ideal for oil-based products, short-shelf-life dairy products, juice, and water bottles, as well as trays for deli meats, salads, and single-serve meals. In addition, Continental offers makeup compacts made from PLA, showing the true versatility of this material.

“This material is very versatile,” Gilbert said. “We’ve seen the resemblance to PET, but what’s amazing is its ability to be molded into objects like makeup compacts - a concept we’re eager to bring to our customers.”
