ACA: Thermoplastic Adhesives

This company has announced a new line of hot-melt adhesives designed to provide a strong bond between a variety of metals and thermoplastics. Thermoplastic elastomers have become increasingly common and are used in everything from automobiles (weather stripping, gaskets, and seals) to hand grips for tools and appliances. Because these thermoplastics have very low surface free energy, it is difficult to establish good adhesion. Unlike most adhesives used for this purpose, ACA's new products make a bond that is often strong enough to tear the thermoplastic material without first applying a primer coat. By eliminating this extra step, manufacturers can cut costs and reduce scrap. The new adhesives are water-based rather than solvent-based, allowing easier clean-up and better compliance to environmental regulations, and they bond many different materials, including several grades of Santoprene™, polyethylene, neoprene, PVC, TPV, EDPM foam, and natural rubber to metals such as aluminum, stainless steel, copper, and brass. They come in a range of viscosities and can be applied using various coating techniques. Heat-activation temperatures range from 250° to 400°F.

MAACO ADHESIVES: Polyurethane-Based Bottled Glue

RHINO ULTRA™ GLUE is a new polyurethane-based bottled glue designed especially for professionals, woodworkers and serious DIY'ers. Unlike leading consumer polyurethane glue, this product provides users with stronger bonds, longer work times, shorter clamp times and extreme weather resistance. Lab tests conducted by Macco scientists have confirmed that RHINO ULTRA GLUE has superior weather resistance and better impact resistance and temperature resistance (both high and low temperatures) than conventional wood glues and construction adhesives. It is 100% waterproof, so rain and snow will not affect its superior bond. RHINO ULTRA GLUE will ship to hardware stores nationwide in September, and will be available in 4.5 oz. and 8.5 oz. bottles, as well as a 1 oz. squeeze tube for small repairs.
