On October 26, 1999, the Adhesive and Sealant Council (ASC) honored George A. L. Gant with the ASC Award. According to Catalyst*, the Award is presented to individuals who have contributed original research or whose significant contributions and high standing have advanced the adhesive and/or sealant industry. In addition, the Award recognizes those whose public life and activities reflect great credit to the industry.

Gant served the ASC for many years, chairing committees and ultimately leading the organization as its president from 1992 to 1994. During his many active years, he moved the council forward and maintained focus on the relatively new ASC Education Foundation, serving as its president from 1989 to 1990. During his 12-year tenure on the Executive Committee, he guided the ASC’s move toward an international presence with successful international conferences in 1990 and 1996.

Gant spent more than 30 years at Dow Corning. He joined the company in 1965 and remained there until his retirement in early 1999. While at Dow Corning, he published numerous scientific articles and registered many patents. His dedication to education has always been evident. He taught algebra at Delta College, management at Central Michigan University and chemistry at Midland Public School.

In the 1970s, Gant became active in the Michigan Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Currently, he serves on its board, the Chairman’s Advisory Committee and is a research advocate, part of a national program. His activities for the organization are so important that the regional volunteer awards are named in his honor, The George Gant Regional Awards. The phrase he coined, “P.A.C.E. – Positive Attitude Changes Everything,” is incorporated into the awards. Gant is also the past recipient of the MS Achievement Award and the Hope Award.

Gant holds a bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in chemistry from North Carolina A&T State University. He has an MBA from Central Michigan University and a PMD in Business Administration from Harvard University.

Gant exemplifies the high integrity and character of ASC Award recipients. In his many roles as father and grandfather, scientist, manager and volunteer, Gant has made major contributions to those he has touched.
