INEOS PHENOL: Bio-Based Feedstocks

July 12, 2022

INEOS Phenol recently launched INVIRIDIS™, its first bio-attributed product line for phenol, acetone, and alphamethylstyrene (AMS). According to the company, these products represent innovation in the global phenol market and offer a more climate-friendly and sustainable alternative to existing phenol, acetone, or AMS.

Phenol and acetone derivatives are essential to and successfully used in a variety of industrial applications, including automotive, coatings, adhesives, construction, and insulation foams. INVIRIDIS will be manufactured at INEOS Phenol sites in Gladbeck, Germany, and Antwerp, Belgium.

The products are made using bio-attributed cumene, which enables the replacement of fossil fuel resources. Mass balance is an essential tool used to reduce the reliance on fossil fuel materials as feedstock across a wide range of industries. In practice, it allows the mixing of renewable and recycled materials with traditional feedstock to create a lower-carbon product. It is recognized as a necessary step in arriving to a fully circular economy.

INEOS Phenol reports that its certification by the International Sustainability & Carbon Certification (ISCC Plus) and The Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials (RSB) allows it to use bio, bio-circular, and circular feedstock. INVIRIDIS products are certified by ISCC Plus and RSB as delivering a 100% substitution of fossil feedstock (mass balance approach) in its production system, enabling a lower carbon footprint compared to conventionally produced products.

“Through our sustainability programme we have developed this new, bio-based product line,” said Hans Casier, INEOS Phenol CEO. “INVIRIDISTM supports our customers with drop-in products that meet their rigorous quality and performance requirements. At the same time, they move the industry closer towards a lower-carbon economy for phenol, acetone, and AMS without compromising the unique product qualities.”
