The White House has announced that no plans will be made to bail out the ailing newspaper industry. With announcements coming nearly every day that another major newspaper will be forced to fold or will be available only online, it’s obvious that the newspaper industry as we know it will never be the same.

I have fond memories of waking up to a cup of coffee and the Detroit Free Press spread out on the table before me, reading Susan Ager’s latest column or just catching up on the area’s news. Now Susan has retired, but the newspaper – which celebrates 178 years today – is still available online. Somehow, staring at a computer screen to read about Aretha Franklin’s hat just isn’t the same.
