ASI E-News Poll Results 8/17/10

August 19, 2010
Is technology making us lose touch with those individuals with whom we might normally form meaningful relationships, such as family? See what E-News readers had to say and leave your comments.

Technologies such as e-mail, social networking sites and online hobby groups are a terrific way for people to connect instantly with others who have similar interests. This might mean, however, that we are losing touch with those individuals with whom we might normally form meaningful relationships, such as our families and neighbors. Do you think this is actually happening? If so, is it necessarily a bad thing?

Yes, this is happening, and it is a change for the worse: 60%

No, this is not happening: 30%

Not sure: 10%

Comments:

“The digital age is fine, but as a global society we are spending FAR, FAR too much time using (and misusing) digital communication. From annoying cell phone drivers to iPods, e-readers and every other electronic gadget, people are undergoing a 'dumbing down' and also a 'numbing down' in terms of their ability to interact in a truly meaningful way with important people, such as family and friends. Chat rooms and social network sites are fine, but not when used to excess, which I fear is happening with far too many people.”

“The key is balance.”

“Nothing like that is happening in small town mid America. We still talk to one another and greet each other warmly all the time. Technology is a tool, not a life style.”

“Yes, this is happening, and it is not considered bad or good at this time. Set your boundaries.”

“It could be good or bad depending on the individuals involved.”
