Arkema and Catalyxx Partner in Development of Biobased Technologies

Arkema and Catalyxx, an innovator in biobased chemicals, recently announced a strategic partnership that aims to develop a new value chain for low-carbon, biobased acrylic resins. The partners plan on leveraging breakthrough proprietary technology to develop the new value chain.
Catalyxx is planning to build a first-of-its-kind industrial facility to produce bio-alcohols, including bio n-butanol, from bioethanol. Based on a patented technology, these bio-alcohols have been validated at a demonstration plant in Seville, Spain, and offer a significantly lower carbon footprint compared to fossil-based alternatives.
Arkema is evaluating the use of these bio-alcohols as feedstocks for the commercial-scale production of biobased acrylic resins with lower carbon footprint. These resins will serve high-performance applications in coatings, adhesives for new energy solutions, e-mobility, living comfort, and sustainable infrastructure markets.
“This partnership is fully aligned with Arkema’s strategy and ambition to deliver ever more sustainable solutions to our customers,” said Richard Jenkins, senior vice president, Arkema Coating Solutions. “By working with Catalyxx, we strengthen our ability to reduce the carbon footprint of our materials and meet the growing demands of environmental regulations and green building certifications.”
"This project is a major milestone for Catalyxx, and we value the trust and shared vision we’ve built with Arkema over the past few years" said Joaquin Alarcón, founder and CEO of Catalyxx. "This new step reinforces our common interest in advancing sustainable materials and supports the continued development of our first commercial plant."
Arkema reports that the project marks a key milestone in the transition toward more responsible materials and reinforces the company’s commitment to replacing fossil-based raw materials with renewable alternatives, without compromising performance.
