Material handling and processing equipment play a critical role in adhesive and sealant manufacturing, influencing product quality, process efficiency, and plant safety. From mixing and pumping to equipment cleaning and maintenance, selecting the right technologies can improve production performance while reducing downtime. The following products highlight recent innovations designed to support these essential manufacturing operations.

CHARLES ROSS & SON CO.: Mixer

The ROSS Model VM-80 VersaMix combines a three-wing anchor agitator and high-speed disperser for mixing, blending, dispersing, heating, cooling, and vacuum processing of liquids, slurries, gels, creams, and pastes. The pictured VersaMix has an 80-gallon working capacity with an 86-gallon full holding capacity.

The vessel is fabricated with Type 316L stainless steel product-contact surfaces with <25 Ra finish, passivated, and electropolished for sanitary operation and simplified cleaning. A multi-agitator system features dry running non-contact dual gas seals and a Type 304 stainless steel heating/cooling jacket rated for 50 psig at 300°F.

The mixer features a three-wing anchor agitator powered by a 5 HP explosion-proof motor operating from 25 to 52 rpm. A skim breaker wing supplied beneath the anchor hub eliminates any dead zone, promoting material movement all throughout the mixing and discharge cycles. Complementing the anchor agitator is a high-speed disperser driven by a 15 HP explosion-proof motor. Equipped with a 9” Type 316 stainless steel sawtooth blade, the disperser operates at speeds up to 2,016 rpm, generating tip speeds up to 4,750 feet per minute. Seal gas purge systems and debris wells are provided for the air/nitrogen-purged double mechanical seals.

NETZSCH PUMPS & SYSTEMS: Pump

The NEMO® R. MY Magnetically Coupled Pump is an innovative pump designed to meet the most demanding requirements of industries requiring leak-free pumping solutions. It is ideal for use in chemical applications to convey highly viscous product.

While mechanical seals are widely used and are a proven method of preventing leakage in pump systems, the failure of a mechanical seal system leads to a seal leak. The NEMO R. MY Magnetically Coupled Pump features a hermetically sealed design, eliminating the risk of leakage. It utilizes a magnetic coupling to transmit torque, ensuring a completely sealed and robust system. This design enhances safety and reliability, making it ideal for handling aggressive, toxic, or abrasive product.

Engineered for versatility, the pump can handle a wide range of viscosities, from low-viscosity fluids to highly viscous, shear-sensitive substances. It provides continuous, pressure-stable, and low-pulsation conveyance, ensuring consistent and reliable performance.

With a maintenance-free sealing system, the magnetic coupling eliminates the need for constant sealing pressure and fluid level monitoring. This pump, specifically designed for handling slurries, can efficiently manage products with viscosities up to 20,000 cps, and it is also compliant with ATEX and can be used in potentially explosive atmospheres without problems.

JOWAT: Flushing Agent

Jowat® 930.54 is a 2-in-1 solution developed specifically for cleaning and flushing melting units used for processing PUR hot melt adhesives. Combining two processing steps in one, it effectively flushes PUR hot melt adhesives from applicator systems and reliably stops undesired crosslinking reactions. Following a short soak time, it is capable of detaching and removing even partially cured adhesive residues.

Demonstrating an exceptional ability to clean PUR hot melt adhesives, it also provides good results with EVA and PO hot melt adhesives. A key differentiator from comparable products on the market, it does not have the oily texture that is widely considered a drawback during processing, instead featuring a dull, wax-like consistency that leaves only minimal traces.

After all remaining adhesive has been drained, the product is introduced and melted at 100 °C to 140 °C, with higher temperatures enhancing the cleaning effect. Following a minimum soak time of 30 minutes, the mixture is ready for flushing. The low viscosity enables Jowat 930.54 to penetrate beneath residues, while its tough texture helps carry away detached particles cleanly. The product is compatible with widely used tank and bag melters.

It can be used in all industries processing PUR hot melt adhesives. The product addresses all processors of PUR hot melt adhesives, independent of production line size. It is currently available in the following packaging sizes: cubes (silicone paper tray, carton, 8 kg in total), 1.5 kg slug (aluminum lining, cardboard sleeve), and 15 kg slug (aluminum lining, cardboard hobbock).

3M: Dispensing Technology

Courtesy of 3M

Designed for the two-part structural adhesive dispensing process, the new 3M™ Adhesive Mix Monitor enhances quality control, simplifies processes, and helps ensure that adhesives will be mixed as expected. It is the first system to provide real-time feedback on the adhesive mix quality during the dispensing process, taking the guesswork out of using two-part adhesives.

Using proprietary 3M technology, the system uses disposable sensors and a small processing unit that streams data in real time, giving users visibility into their dispensing process, whether they are in the room or on the other side of the globe. The system utilizes red and green light indicators to present data that is clear and easy to understand and alerts operators to dispensing issues as they occur, minimizing rework and reducing the need for slow and costly checks. Additionally, the technology adds a level of traceability to two-part adhesive dispensing.

The system works exclusively with 3M two-part structural adhesives and easily integrates into existing manufacturing processes with simple setup, a small footprint, and just a few pieces.
