ACC Responds to U.S.-Canada Tariff Dispute

The American Chemistry Council (ACC) issued a statement last week expressing disappointment that U.S. and Canadian officials did not reach an agreement to prevent retaliatory duties between the two countries. The statement emphasized the importance of the trading relationship between the two countries and explained the importance of Canada as a destination for U.S. chemical exports.

The statement explained, “The United States and Canada share a deeply integrated trade relationship that strengthens North American competitiveness, supports new investments in both countries, and sustains millions of jobs through the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).

“Canada remains one of the largest destinations for U.S. chemical exports, and the U.S. chemical industry relies on our relationship with Canada and Mexico to remain competitive in the face of structural excess capacity and unfair trading practices from other countries. ACC urges U.S. and Canadian officials to return to the negotiating table and secure a deal that helps American and Canadian businesses and workers. ACC, along with the Chemistry Industry Association of Canada (CIAC), and Mexican Chemical Industry Association (ANIQ) has developed joint recommendations and launched work streams to help deliver practical, actionable recommendations that can be implemented to enhance investment, innovation, and supply chain resilience across North America.”
