Medical device manufacturers and material formulators can use these biodegradable PHBs to develop non-toxic plastic devices and drug delivery systems that intentionally break down after they are inserted into the body for a specific amount of time. These PHBs are ideal for a variety of medical devices, such as biodegradable sutures, bone regeneration supports, nerve guidance channels and surgical screws. For example, a study of dental implants in dogs showed that bone defects covered with PHB and titanium membranes demonstrated more bone regrowth than the control group.
