On November 4, Solvay Chemicals Inc. announced the suspension of its August sulfur surcharge on sulfite products.

“With the recent drop in sulfur prices for fourth quarter 2008, the cost of sulfur has returned to the level needed to suspend the surcharge,” says Sulfite Products Business Manager Michael D. Wood. “With this move, Solvay Chemicals stands by its commitment to eliminate the surcharge once sulfur prices decreased. Should sulfur prices rise again, we reserve the right to reinstate the surcharge program.”

Surcharges are calculated using the amount of increase or decrease in the cost of sulfur compared to the first quarter of 2008, and factoring the amount of sulfur used to manufacture sodium sulfite and sodium metabisulfite.
