Among the methods for curing silicone release liners in label making, UV and nitrogen in the process produce a better cure for pressure sensitive labels.
Scientists already understood the mechanics of adhesion in gecko feet, but two academic papers published this year give a clearer picture of the molecular structures that create it.
Dow recently announced the availability of its new solvent-free SYL-OFF™ SL 184 coating, an energy-efficient alternative that minimizes misting at high product label production line speeds.
Alex Knott currently heads up a global team at Dow that has developed innovations in pressure-sensitive silicone release liner coating technology.

The AWA Release Liner Industry Leadership Award was presented to Alex Knott of Dow during the recent AWA Global Release Liner Industry Conference & Exhibition in Amsterdam.
Most polymers have a low surface energy, which results in difficulties when further processing (e.g., coating, printing, or gluing) and requires the use of surface treatment to increase the surface energy.
Hulme received the award, which is given for an outstanding contribution to release liners, during the recent 2019 Global Release Liner Industry Conference & Exhibition in Charlotte, N.C.

Adrian Hulme, R&D principal for Label & Graphics Materials North America with Avery Dennison Corp., has received the annual AWA Release Liner Industry Leadership Award.
To achieve the desired level of release, humidity resistance, hydrophobicity and other properties, most release coatings today are based on silicone and/or fluorochemical technologies. Fluorochemicals provide hydrophobicity, an important release coating feature that drives performance.
This company recently released its new Syl-Off®SL 35 release modifier, reportedly the next generation of controlled release additive technology for solventless release coatings.
