Michelin ResiCare, Axens Partner on Bio-based Building Block for Adhesives

Michelin ResiCare and Axens have entered into exclusive discussions to establish a strategic partnership focused on a technology for producing 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF), a bio-based building block for green chemistry.
The companies said the partnership is intended to accelerate the industrialization and commercialization of the technology to help address decarbonization challenges in the chemicals and materials industries.
5-HMF can be used to produce resins, polymers, and other bio-based materials, enabling the replacement of some petroleum-derived feedstocks. The material can also be used to develop adhesives, resins, and bio-based polymers.
One potential application is polyethylene furanoate (PEF), a bio-based plastic that is being developed as an alternative to polyethylene terephthalate (PET) for packaging, bottles, and textile fibers. Beyond polymers, 5-HMF also has potential applications in solvents, intermediates, and specialty chemicals.
Because it is compatible with existing industrial processes, 5-HMF can replace some fossil-based compounds, including formaldehyde, with renewable alternatives derived from plant-based feedstocks.
The technology was developed through a joint R&D program between Michelin ResiCare and IFP Energies Nouvelles (IFPEN), with support from France's ADEME and the Circular Bio-based Europe Joint Undertaking (CBE JU). Michelin ResiCare plans to operate the first commercial production unit in Péage-de-Roussillon, France. The facility will have an annual production capacity of approximately 3,000 metric tons, with startup scheduled for early 2027.
