BindEthics Scales Bio-Based Wood Adhesive for Commercial Production
BindEthics, a UK-based developer of sustainable adhesives, has transitioned its flagship bio-based adhesive, Ecohesive™, from laboratory development to commercial-scale production. The company said the milestone supports its goal of replacing formaldehyde-based wood adhesives while improving recyclability in engineered wood products.
Production has progressed from laboratory testing to 40-liter commercial batches, with a validated pathway to 2,000-liter manufacturing volumes. According to BindEthics, customer discussions represent potential demand exceeding 6,000 metric tons. Initial production will support industrial trials with Tier 1 manufacturers and eco-plywood fabricators across Europe.
"Reaching commercial-scale production is a defining moment for BindEthics," said Colin Warburg, commercial lead at BindEthics. "We are scaling our operations to meet growing market demand driven by increasingly stringent environmental regulations."
Ecohesive is a 100% bio-based, formaldehyde-free adhesive for engineered wood applications. Produced from refined industrial bio-waste, including brewing industry by-products, the adhesive is designed as a drop-in replacement compatible with existing mixing and pressing equipment. The company said the technology could enable up to 90% of engineered wood products—including furniture panels and construction boards—to become fully recyclable.
Target applications include plywood, oriented strand board (OSB), mass timber products, acoustic panels, and furniture manufacturing. BindEthics is also evaluating the adhesive for freight and logistics applications requiring structural durability.
