Wacker’s Silicones business segment manufactures silicone sealants, along with elastomers, emulsions, resins, and many other products. The segment’s total sales reached nearly €2.81 billion (approximately $3.2 billion) in 2024, compared to €2.74 billion (approximately $3.12 billion) in 2023. This represents a 2.3% increase over 2023, which the company attributed to "an improved product mix, with a significantly higher proportion of specialty products, and better plant utilization rates." The company does not provide specific adhesives/sealants-related sales and other information.
WACKER reports that the company is one of the world’s leading actors in the areas of potting compounds and silicone-based thermal interface materials.
The company recently introduced silane-crosslinking binders GENIOSIL® STP-E 140 and GENIOSIL® STP-E 340, which are based on WACKER’s state-of-the-art Alpha3 technology. This new generation of silane-terminated polyethers facilitate the formulation of tin-free sealants and adhesives that are highly elastic and achieve a low modulus of elasticity. Such properties are desirable in the construction sector and, reportedly, a first in the adhesives and sealants world. These binders consist of both alpha and gamma-silyl groups, with the alpha-silyl groups leading to greater reactivity, while the slower-reacting gamma ends providing a positive impact on elastic recovery. Areas of application for these products include the construction sector and assembly applications.
NOTES: In January 2025, the company announced the start-up of two new production facilities for specialty silicones in Japan and South Korea to serve growing demand from the automotive and construction industries. In May of 2024, the company announced the acquisition of the manufacturing assets and know-how of U.S.-based Bio Med Sciences Inc., expanding its expertise and business in silicone-coated healthcare products.
