While adhesives have been tools for human ingenuity since the very beginning, it's been a long road to the sophisticated automotive adhesives preferred by today's OEMs.
It’s been said that hindsight is 2020. To usher in the new decade, we’d like to offer a retrospective on the automotive adhesives—both liquids and pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) tapes and films—that continue to redefine the industry.
According to Dow, this new adhesive cures at room temperature and provides fast adhesion for shorter cycle times.
June 30, 2020
Dow recently introduced its new DOWSIL™ EA-3838 Fast Adhesive, a primerless silicone adhesive that cures rapidly without oven heat for improved productivity and reduced energy usage in the manufacture of appliances, automotive electronics, lighting, and avionics.
Designs for consumer electronics continue to evolve, and pressure-sensitive tape manufacturers are addressing those changing needs with products that go beyond simple bonding.
As the marketplace for consumer electronics devices becomes more sophisticated, the adhesive products that hold them together have to be just as versatile and multifunctional. Consumers have demanded their devices get sleeker, more powerful, and lighter, putting demands on manufacturers.
The Pressure Sensitive Tape Council defines a pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) as requiring two things: aggressive and permanent tack, and adhesion with finger pressure. This simple definition makes the concept of a PSA easy for anyone to understand.
Masten Space Systems will deliver science and technology to the Moon ahead of human missions.
June 10, 2020
NASA has selected Masten Space Systems of Mojave, Calif., to deliver and operate eight payloads—with nine science and technology instruments—to the Moon’s South Pole in 2022 to help lay the foundation for human expeditions to the lunar surface beginning in 2024.
Bonding in automotive, aerospace, and other assembly operations can be improved through effective surface pretreatment technologies such as carbonic cleaning.
Cleaning and surface pretreatment are directly related in many industries. Traditional pretreatment methods such as alcohol wiping or air nozzles are used to clean off contaminants and prepare surfaces for adhesion.
It may be a one- or two-part system. We need temperature resistance up to 500˚C, and the adhesive will be applied to fill small gaps in a hot mild steel structure. The required initial setting time is 5 min.
Chicago Glue recently helped Systematics more than double its output of face shields for healthcare workers on the front lines of the coronavirus pandemic.

When running a business, many scenarios cross your mind. You prepare and plan and adapt. Yet very few, if any, can say they were prepared for the global pandemic that has put stress on not only their company, but also its team members and its operations. As always in challenging times, good things still have the opportunity to happen.
BioPreferred adhesives must use bio-based and renewable components instead of petroleum-based components.
April 23, 2020
Mactac recently announced its recognition as the first pressure-sensitive adhesive manufacturer to have products listed in the BioPreferred program established by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).
